A 50-year-old is the Big Island’s first traffic fatality of 2017, according to a written Hawaii County Fire Department statement.
The man, whose name has not been released, was one of four people taken to the Hilo Medical Center by ambulance after a collision between a van and a pickup truck shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday on Highway 130 near the entrance to Leilani Estates in lower Puna.
The others were listed in serious condition, according to the statement.
The cause of the crash is under investigation by police and traffic was re-routed through Leilani Estates.
